Unlike the United States, most European motorways have two kinds of stops. Service areas have fuel, restaurants or cafés, a shop and toilets, and are usually run by private operators under contract. Rest areas are simpler parking areas, often with toilets and picnic tables, maintained by the road authority. Many sit in pairs, one on each side of the motorway, so check that a stop is on your side of the road.
